Kilauea in Hawaii has been erupting since December 23, 2024.
Paroxysms lasting several hours follow one another, separated by periods of calm lasting 1 to 22 days.
Paroxysm No. 40, on January 12, 2026, lasted almost 10 hours, from 8:22 a.m. to 6:04 p.m. (local time). It followed Paroxysm No. 39 (12/23/2025) by 19-20 days. Lava projections and overflows began four days earlier. Then, a continuous lava fountain reached a height of 250 m, with a maximum flow rate of 350 m3/s. The plume of gas and tephra rose to a height of 4 km. 5.5 million m3 of lava were emitted, causing a deflation of 17 microradians.
