The Paris-Saclay Geosciences Laboratory (GEOPS)

The Paris-Saclay Geosciences Laboratory (GEOPS) is a joint research unit (UMR 8148) between the CNRS and Paris-Saclay University. GEOPS is a member of the Paris-Saclay OSU (OSUPS) and the Pierre Simon Laplace Institute Research Federation (IPSL).

Our research teams are mainly composed of geologists, geochemists, sedimentologists, geophysicists, and hydrogeologists who combine their approaches on topics rooted in several societal issues:

1 – Continental hydrogeology, pollution dynamics, and understanding the transfer and influence of weathering processes on (bio)geochemical cycles subject to anthropogenic and climatic forcing

2 – Understanding the dynamics of past and present climates and their impact on Arctic environments

3 – Subsurface-atmosphere-volcanism interactions (Earth and Mars) and associated risks (volcanic, tsunamis, etc.)

4 – Resources (geothermal energy, critical metals, etc.), mainly in sedimentary basins, whose proper exploitation requires detailed characterization of the subsurface and reconstruction of their geological history

GEOPS’s activities are heavily influenced by geochemical, mineralogical (PANOPLY), and geophysical instrumentation, which is at the heart of many research projects. These analytical approaches are combined with analog and digital modeling techniques and digital processing of spatial spectro-imagery of planets. Finally, GEOPS researchers are heavily involved in field and oceanographic missions.
